How it all started Edith was first introduced to Multisport in 1998 after a lower-back injury ended her competitive rowing career senior year at Harvard University. Her rehabilitation called for swimming, cycling, and running. That May, she borrowed a friend's old 10-speed, entered her first triathlon, and won 1st place in her age-group. The fun and friendly event atmosphere, the exciting mix of multiple disciplines, and most of all, the camaraderie amongst athletes caused Edith to fall passionately in love with her newfound sport.
Juggling Multisport with Career After graduating magna cum laude from Harvard with a degree in Applied Mathematics, Edith devoted her next four years to an ambitious career in computer software. Despite heavy job responsibilities and 80+ hour work-weeks, she continued to compete in Multisport events whenever possible. During this period, Edith earned positions on Team USA for the 1999 Triathlon World Championships in Montreal, Canada, and the 2001 Duathlon World Championships in Rimini, Italy, where she placed 5th in her age-group. Also in 2001, Edith won the Athena National Champion title in both Olympic Distance Triathlon and Duathlon. She was honored as a 2001 All-American by Inside Triathlon Magazine.
A new Edith Chan In 2002, Edith re-evaluated her priorities and made the decision to depart from software and restructure her life around Health and Multisport. She began serving as board director for the not-for-profit, charitable San Francisco Triathlon Club and training with the best coaches and athletes in the Bay Area. With newfound focus and guidance from her coaches, she made tremendous breakthroughs in her technique and fitness throughout the season, earning her numerous podium stands and the Inside Triathlon All-American honors again in 2002.
Today, Edith is pursuing her graduate studies in Traditional Chinese Medicine at the American College of Traditional Chinese Medicine to become an Licensed Acupuncturist and Herbalist. She also coaches the indoor Spinning® program for SF Tri Club. When she is not training or racing, Edith loves to read and play piano (see Edith's Corner). Now more than ever, Edith treasures a healthy balance between her athletic pursuits, career goals in Holistic Medicine, and her relationships with friends and family.
